Fourth of July/ Independence Day is a federal holiday in the USA. It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This is the most important document in American history: it cut all political ties with Britain. It was written by Thomas Jefferson, a landowner and lawyer from Virginia. The Declaration of Independence was more tan a statement that the colonies were free and independent, a new nation. It claimed that all men had a natural right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The Statue of Liberty also commemorates the signing of the Declaration.
