August 20th is the day of king Stephan 1st and the day of new bread as well. Stephen (later St. Stephen) was the one who united the pagan Hungarian tribes and spread Christianity. He was crowned Hungary's first king in 1000 and his reign lasted for 38 years.
So on 20th August the nation commemorates the founding of the Hungarian state in the Carpatian Basin. On this day you can find plenty of interesting programmes in Budapest. In front of the Parliament or at Heros Square there are state programs. Water and air parade takes place above the Danube. The highlight of the night is the long and beautiful firework-show.

Am 20. August gibt es ein Nationalfest in Ungarn. Da feiert man den Tag des Heiligen Stefan (der erste König von Ungarn) und den Tag des neuen Brotes. Das Königreich Ungarn wurde im Jahre 1000 von Stephan I. gegründet. Er gilt als der Nationalheilige des heutigen Ungarn und christianisierte die heidnischen "Magyaren". Seine Herrschaft dauerte 38 Jahre.
In Ungarn allerort gibt es am 20. August verschiedene Veranstaltungen, z.B. vor dem Parlament oder auf dem Heldenplatz. Wasser- und Luftparade findet über der Donau statt. Es gibt am Abend auch ein langes und schönes Feuerwerk.
