March 15th is a national holiday in Hungary. It stands for democracy and freedom, on that day we commemorate the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence from the royal rule of Habsburg kings of 1848-49.
Revolutionary poet, Sándor Petőfi led the uprising for national independence. Petőfi read a list of demands and recited his famous fiery poem, called the "National Song" (Nemzeti dal). The demonstrations spilt over into a war against Austria led by Lajos Kossuth. A new, democratic government was elected with Hungary’s first Prime Minister, Count Lajos Batthyány. The War of Independence lasted until August 1849. The Hungarian forces achieved several victories, which led to Hungary’s complete independence. However, in the end the Russian army helped invade Hungary and our forces were defeated and the PM was executed along with 13 others in the city of Arad.
