Saint Nicholas Day in Hungary

Saint Nicholas is a popular Christian Saint among children across Europe because he brings gifts by the morning of December 6. On the evening of December 5 children carefully polish their best boot and put it on the windowsill or in front of the door to be filled by St. Nicholas. He knows the children's good and bad deeds so he and his helper, the 'Krampusz' devil (a mean goblin who punishes naughty children) come with a huge sack full of presents. During the night they leave in the boots bags filled with candies, tangerines, oranges, Santa shaped chocolate figures, peanuts, or small presents for children to find in the morning. If someone has been bad, he or she finds a bunch of golden twigs. Most children get some of each as no one is all good or all bad.
