Valentine's Day

St. Valentine's Day, February 14, is the day of lovers. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a public holiday in most of them.

The roots of this holiday are in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia (held annually to be in honor of Faunus). Greeks also celebrated their Goddess Juno 14th February, the sanctifier of weddings. Juno is often depicted with an apple in one hand and a king’s scepter in the other hand in which a cuckoo bird symbolizes the coming of spring.

Valentine's Day is also known as 'Bálint Nap'. Men called Bálint celebrate their name day on 14th February. Bálint has always been a very popular name in Hungary. Valentine’s Day in Hungary centers around romantic love. It was not very widely celebrated until the 1980s. Generally only young couples exchange gifts on this day while in England and America people send cards for just about every love connection from couples to grandparents to their grandchildren. In Budapest many couples go out dining in Valentine's evening or do different activities together like ice skating, walking in the city or night cruising on the  river Danube.
